Concerted efforts to improve and develop the human resources of Mayaro were in full focus, as 14 community-based organisations were represented at the start of capacity building initiatives held at the Mayaro Resource Centre last week.A total of 28 representatives participated in a two-day training workshop, the year's first instalment of specialised training offered by energy company bpTT, to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community-based organisations (CBOs) from Mayaro and environs. The first workshop for the 2011 cycle, Using Mathematics to Solve Problems and Communicate, demonstrated the importance of mathematics and statistics in everyday life and in formulating public programmes and policies.
The programme started in 2003 and has provided valuable training to more than 1,600 people, representing communities across the south-eastern region. The sessions were delivered by Cross and Associates.Ronda Francis, manager–corporate social responsibility, bpTT, explained that the primary focus of these training sessions was the empowerment of the NGOs and CBOs, thereby facilitating the sustainable growth of the community. "The importance of these organisations as the conduit of social development is recognised globally, and bpTT intends to help foster their long-term stability and sustainability. In essence, we are strengthening the hands of those who will mould the future of Mayaro," she said. The training takes the form of two-day, interactive workshop sessions where participants enhance fundamental skill-sets required for capacity building, including conflict management, financial planning, communications skills and project management. The courses deliver a blend of theoretical learning and real-life practical applications.
"This training applies a problem-solving approach to building social capital and fostering community development. The investment made by bpTT is paying dividends as demonstrated by the locally-led thrust toward community development. The focus is enhancing capacity to allow the people of Mayaro to recognise and realise their enormous potential," explained Andrew Cross, principal consultant, Cross and Associates.Workshops are conducted monthly, with participants who complete the sessions receiving certificates validating their training. Marvin Edwards, second vice-chairman, Mayaro Guayaguayare Unemployment Organisation and Concerned Citizens (MGUOCC) was very enthusiastic about the workshops."This training helps us to be more effective in implementing, managing and completing community projects. An added benefit is that we get to link with other organisations and form networks that work together for the greater benefit of our neighbourhoods. Just like maths, it all adds up because we will be better equipped to be proactive in the development of Mayaro," Edwards pointed out.
