You may ask yourself, "why enrol my son/ daughter into music classes?", or "what are the benefits of music lessons?"Much research has been done concerning the benefits to pre-schoolers and this is what has been discovered."Music plays an important role in developing the holistic child. When we use the term 'holistic child' we refer to every aspect of the child which would include socially, creatively, intellectually, cognitively, physically, emotionally and spiritually."It creates a sense of structure, discipline and confidence, and is a medium for self-expression and imagination. Learning music teaches the child the value of seeing things through and completing tasks, concentration and the ability to follow instructions.
"Participating in music helps develop the fine motor skills, hand-eye co-ordination, reading and listening skills, as well as develop and exercise aural discrimination."So said music teacher Josanne Walters-Joseph who has been working with children since 2007.Born into a musical family she began performing at the tender age of five. This allowed her to have first-hand experience of how music can enrich the life of the young child and is an excellent medium to channel creativity, cognitive and physical skills and add discipline and structure to a child's life.Walters-Joseph currently holds certification in Music–Trinity College (London), Early Childhood Care and Education (UWI) and is presently pursuing her Bsc in Applied Psychology–Costaatt.
A Music Festival Championship winner Walters-Joseph enjoys performing and teaching others to perform.Along with her passion for music she also has a love for working with children, which is why she decided to design the programme jmusic4kids.Walters-Joseph began teaching music to children ages four-plus in 2009 as a hobby. She quickly discovered their enthusiasm and their ability to absorb quickly all that was taught, which fueled her passion even further.Jmusic4kids is a music literacy programme designed for children between the ages of four and eight years. This programme focuses on developing a musical foundation for students by covering a wide range of work topics such as Introduction to Music, Introduction to the Piano, The Musical Language, Signs and Symbols in Music and Concepts in Music.
