Digicel treated the children of Pointe-a-Pierre Government Special Needs School to a bounty of more than $26,000 worth of new sporting equipment last Monday.Exercise balls, cricket bats, tennis balls, foam javelins, bocce sets, bean bags, exercise mats and footballs were just some of the many items that greeted the children as they entered the school's hall to view the donated equipment. The students looked on in excitement as Penny Gomez, communications manager at Digicel, presented their principal, Janice Paul, with a plaque wishing them all success on and off the field. This donation is part of Digicel's ongoing thrust to support special needs children throughout the nation.
"Digicel wanted to make a contribution to the school, and when we realised that they had very little sporting equipment, we recognised this was a pressing need," Gomez said. The company has always advocated that sport is crucial to childhood development, and was determined to provide the school with the means of giving the children the opportunity to engage in sport in a meaningful way.Principal Paul thanked Digicel, and gave the assurance that "this equipment will go a long way towards the development of these physically-challenged children."Following the formalities, it was out into the playground, where the eager children got to try out their spanking new equipment. Some ran football drills with their new cones, while others practiced batting and bowling. Gomez even got in on the fun, giving one lucky student a batting lesson and showing him just the right stance to hit a six."The smiles on the children's faces mean everything to us at Digicel," Gomez said, as she looked at the students playing with their new gear.
