Already known for its good music, punctual start, and all-round great time, Jazz Artists on the Greens 2011 will seek to improve the experience for all. From offerings of musical instruments, artistes' CDs and festival memorabilia for sale, as well as free giveaways and door prizes, better lighting of the grounds to the variety of available food fare, this year the range of festival-related improvements, concessions and paraphernalia will be expanded to offer to patrons a truly enhanced gastronomical and artistic experience.Having moved to the Greens at WASA's Head Office at Farm Road, St Joseph, patrons who have always been encouraged to dress comfortably, will have more room to spread their blankets, mats and lounge chairs as they enjoy a world-class cast.
According to the event's producers, Production One Ltd, "Jazz Artists on The Greens is a first step towards a local jazz festival, similar in popularity and size to those held annually in St Lucia and Barbados, but always remaining true to the jazz." Although still not yet at the audience level of those mega-visitor festivals, the results have been encouraging: the event has since grown from a small, concert into an annual "must-attend, social occasion" for a number of regular patrons, who attend the event which is noted for providing "good music and great company...in most pleasant surroundings".This year's show continues to build on the tradition developed over the past nine years. During that period Production One Ltd has conscientiously sought out and presented artistes, resident both in the Caribbean as well as throughout the diaspora, whose performances are rooted in Caribbean-styled jazz and rhythms.
From inception Jazz Artists on The Greens has paid tribute to the national instrument, and some of the featured pannists over the years have included Ray Holman, Ken "Professor" Philmore, Rudy "Two Left" Smith and Dane Gulston. This year will be no different, and young hot shot pan virtuoso Mikhail Salcedo will grace the stage.Starting in 2008 a Cuban act has now become a staple at JAOTG, following on the heels of Jyros, featuring Yamel Jorva on piano, world famous Tamara Castaneda on vibraphone in 2009, and last year's violin sensation William Roblejo, comes the Ernesto Vega Trio featuring Ernesto on clarinet and sax.The other artistes for 2011 include petite Jamaican songbird, Niquet Goldson; Grenadian pianist/keyboardist Eddie Bullen; and Barbadian diva Marisa Lindsay.
