In a recent function held at the Harvard Sports Club, the Canadian Women's Club of Trinidad and Tobago (CWC) distributed financial assistance to several of T&T's charitable organisations. The CWC which is based in Port-of-Spain has been in existence for the past 70 years. Its origin dates back to times of war whereby the wives of Canadian servicemen based in Chaguaramas came together with the common goal of giving back and promoting a spirit of support and contribution in our local society. Today the club holds firm to its objectives of fostering friendship among Canadians in Trinidad, doing helpful work in the community as well as keeping alive interest in Canadian affairs. In recent times the club has executed numerous fund-raising and social activities which have been all produced with the goal of providing support for numerous local causes while fostering camaraderie and integration between Canadians and T&T nationals.
Some of the events produced by the CWC are the annual pan and parang celebrations and Carnival fete held in association with the Harvard Sports Club and the Bargain Hunters Sale. This year the CWC gave donations to several worthy causes. At the recent welfare distribution function representatives from charities were on hand to receive cheques towards their organisations' needs. These organisations included the Life Centre, the St Ann's/Cascade Motivational Programme, the Dyslexic Association, the Cluny Project for the Needy, the St Ann's Home for the Elderly, the Loveuntil Foundation, the National Council of Voluntary Associations for Childcare and the St Martin's Welfare Association. A spokesman for the CWC welfare committee offered this statement, "We are honoured to play our part in supporting these various charitable agencies and we consider it our social responsibility to continue our support of these foundations, and we encourage all groups and members of society to persist with philanthropic initiatives. "We thank all our members and corporate sponsors for making this effort a reality."
