On January 26, St James Secondary School celebrated its 50th anniversary. In cognisance of this, the school, PTA and its alumni, in partnership, have planned and scheduled a number of events to occur between January and December in celebration of this milestone. The theme for this celebration is "Developing Minds...Inspiring Futures." As part of the celebrations, the alumni will be hosting a Gala Dinner on Saturday, May 14 at the Algico Rooftop, St Vincent Street, Port-of-Spain. At this event, the St James Secondary Alumni will be recognising those past students who have excelled and contributed professionally in the area of music and entertainment. Among those expected to be recognised include: Destra Garcia, Maximus Dan, Ziggy Rankin, Umi Marcano, Black Sage, Gary Cordner to name a few.
The alumni has set up a scholarship fund, in honour of the late Bertram Allette, where a scholarship is awarded annually to one deserving student (chosen by the school, according to specific criteria) to attend a tertiary education programme. Part proceeds realised from this and other proposed events by the alumni, go towards this scholarship fund, as well as other school activities, during the year. Music at the reunion will be supplied by Crosby Sounds, and tickets are on sale at Crosby's Music Centre, Western Main Road, St James; and, at B & M Ice Cream, Panka Street, St James; as well as committee members. This all-inclusive reunion costs $350 and will be held from 6 pm to 1 am.
