Stephen John’s mission is to become a professional music minister, songwriter and arranger. Remaining grounded in the truth in order to assist those who need restoration of their whole being is also his aim. His impetus to achieve this—living in the word of his Saviour, Jesus Christ. Having taken a five-year hiatus, the gospel singer, whose last full-length album was recorded in 2006, is back with the hit single—Soar. The song is currently receiving steady rotation on various frequencies, and is a favourite among the Christian community. Confessing that a stormy period in his life was the inspiration behind penning the track, John said: “That song was actually written some years ago. I was going through some serious challenges at the time, and instead of giving into my depression, I wrote the song as a testimony that I would get over that period in my life.

“I did not record it right away, though. It was only after I met producer Sammy Sylvester who was impressed with my vocals he heard on my previous album, that I eventually recorded the single,” articulated John. The 33-year-old father of three, who also holds numerous titles and awards in the gospel arena, explained that the song was really set to inspire everyone to keep pressing toward their goal in spite of any obstacles they may face.

New album in the  making

John, who attends the Arouca Revival Tabernacle Church, is currently working on three more singles to be released later in the year. Another full-length album titled the Gospel of Romance, is also on his list to be completed this year. He indicated that the tracks on that album would focus on love and relationships in the lives of Christian couples. “I always wanted to write songs that speak to that aspect of a Christian’s life, because we fall in love just like anybody else, we have emotional and physical struggles just like anybody else, but we never really talk about it,” revealed John. “This album is really just revealing the reality of a Christian’s walk in life with Christ as a disciple, but also as a man and how we deal with the issue of love and relationships.”

Touching lives through his music

The El Dorado Secondary School alumnus, when asked his future plans stated: “I just want to continue making good music that will touch the lives of people bringing them closer to a relationship with Christ.”
