I came across an article posted on LinkedIn which was entitled "How to fail at a job interview." What struck me about the article written by Susannah Breslin was that she came to the realisation that the "real reason why people hire you is because they LIKE you...it's not about your skills, it's not about your resume, it's not about if you answered the questions right. Do they LIKE you? If they like you the best, they will hire you. If they don't, they won't. She goes on to say that, "People tell themselves their experience, their success-filled resume, and their above-par interviewing skills are what will get them the job. That's simply not true. It's what people want to believe because if that were true, they could quantify why one person gets hired and why another does not."
Susannah likens interviews like two dogs sniffing one another's butts. Either you click or you don't. Because when she chose to hire a young female journalist, she did so because she liked her. Sure, the young journalist was talented and a good writer. But, for the most part, she just liked her. Why? Because the journalist reminded her of herself. The above points were further highlighted when I was watching a re-run of the Oprah Winfrey Show. Winfrey was interviewing Iyanla Vanzant and they were clarifying to each other a misunderstanding which took place 11 years ago. What struck me was that during the conversation, Vanzant said, looking back, she realised she wasn't hoping for a business deal when she met with Winfrey.
She wanted validation and that, "I just wanted you to say you liked me and you never did." Winfrey's response was, "....Not only did I like you, I would leave the stage and give you the stage because I liked you so much. What did you think that meant when I am sitting in the audience and letting you sit on stage and run the show?" This to me was a powerful, statement. Generally, people will help/hire someone because they like them. Give it some thought!
