Participants at the opening of the Footprints Eco Resort & Spa's ground-breaking Native Forest Walk last month, got the opportunity to view the 25 species of mature native trees on the property, and to help with the planting of more than a dozen additional native species. Forestry specialist Leo Lendor led the extremely informative interpretive tour, explaining the benefits and characteristics of each species planted, and how each would enrich the environment.
The resort's focus on the protection and enrichment of the natural environment has already led to development of its impressive bird and butterfly gardens, and it now hopes to encourage even more wildlife with the development of the Native Forest Walk. "We'd like our visitors, whether local or foreign, to be able to appreciate the richness and diversity of our natural heritage-I think it's a resource we undervalue as a modern society," said chief executive officer, Mia Persad-Douglas.
About Footprints Eco Resort & Spa
n Fronted by Culloden Bay in rural Tobago, Footprints is 62 acres of reforested former sugar and cocoa estate. After 16 years of continuous operation, it's still the only purpose-built eco resort on the island.
The resort carefully considered every aspect of its design and operations to reflect this environmental consciousness. This harmony is evident in its sustainably constructed buildings, eye-catching butterfly and bird gardens, organic kitchen gardens and unique salt-water pools. With just ten units scattered across the spectacular spot, privacy is guaranteed for families looking for a quiet retreat, or couples seeking quality time together.
