Positive and Pregnant, a short film, shot and produced in T&T, will be aired on CNC3 tonight at 9.30 as part of the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company's (TTFC) TV Film Festival 2011. The docudrama addresses one of the critical issues resulting from the spread of HIV/Aids in the Caribbean, the transmission of the virus from mother to child. Positive and Pregnant showcases Alicia, a young, educated and ambitious woman who has a lot going on in her life, especially now that she finds true love in her new boyfriend Marvin.
The passion of love leads to risky sexual behaviour and she soon finds out that she is pregnant. Things take a turn for the worst as a precautionary test leads her to discover that she is also HIV positive. Distraught, devastated, angry and losing hope quickly, she comes closer to seeing each waking moment of her life as a step closer to death. But is there really no reason to hope? This groundbreaking docudrama promises to answer this question and more. The 24-minute film provides important information concerning HIV testing, stigma and discrimination and the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/Aids (PMTCT).
Positive and Pregnant features an ensemble cast and stars Jeanine Lee-Kim, Duane Dario Dixon, along with supporting performances from Pauline Mark, Lylah Persad and Naomi Abiola. Local HIV/Aids advocate Lorna Henry also makes a special appearance. The docudrama is the first major production undertaken by the Walker Lela Foundation for Women's Empowerment, a nonprofit organisation which aims to improve the quality of life of women and children from all walks of life through support programmes and outreach. The film was directed by Stacy Lela and produced by Candice Lela-Rolingson, co-founders of the women's foundation. The film is the first film production for screenwriter Nyron Rolingson, as well as Woodbrook-based ForceFed Productions, which is credited for the video production.
