The im­posed state of emer­gency did not stop mem­bers of the Cou­va-Point Lisas Cham­ber of Com­merce from en­joy­ing their 12th an­nu­al fam­i­ly day and cook­out com­pe­ti­tion on Sep­tem­ber 4 on the grounds of the Cou­va South MP of­fice at Cam­den Road, Cou­va. The com­pe­ti­tion was won by the team from Plipde­co with its ar­ray of cur­ried and grilled dish­es. The judges were pres­i­dent of the Cham­ber, Nal Ram­s­ingh, and mem­bers Val Ram­s­ingh and Roger Joseph. Last year's win­ner, the team from Sco­tia­bank Cou­va, placed sec­ond, while the third place went to SFM, a salt­fish trad­ing im­port and whole­sale es­tab­lish­ment from Cou­va.

Cham­ber mem­bers al­so en­joyed a day of recre­ation­al games of crick­et, ta­ble ten­nis and cards. The Cham­ber pres­i­dent ex­pressed his plea­sure at the spir­it of ca­ma­raderie dis­played by the mem­bers. Speak­ing on the state of emer­gency and the cur­few, Ram­s­ingh opined that crime had been re­duced but be­lieved that Cou­va was in need of in­creased pa­trols to keep crim­i­nal el­e­ments out of the grow­ing in­dus­tri­al town.
