The imposed state of emergency did not stop members of the Couva-Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce from enjoying their 12th annual family day and cookout competition on September 4 on the grounds of the Couva South MP office at Camden Road, Couva. The competition was won by the team from Plipdeco with its array of curried and grilled dishes. The judges were president of the Chamber, Nal Ramsingh, and members Val Ramsingh and Roger Joseph. Last year's winner, the team from Scotiabank Couva, placed second, while the third place went to SFM, a saltfish trading import and wholesale establishment from Couva.
Chamber members also enjoyed a day of recreational games of cricket, table tennis and cards. The Chamber president expressed his pleasure at the spirit of camaraderie displayed by the members. Speaking on the state of emergency and the curfew, Ramsingh opined that crime had been reduced but believed that Couva was in need of increased patrols to keep criminal elements out of the growing industrial town.
