His participation in Synergy Soca Star's competition back in 2006 may have been the reason why he now has a household name, but Kimba Sorzano's passion for singing and performing really began at the tender age of four. While attending the St Xavier's Private School, Sorzano took part in all the calypso competitions, where he frequently placed first. The tenor pan was his chosen instrument at that time. "I just love music," he said. "I think it is a real unique way to express yourself because it carries so much energy and feeling," he added. The San Juan native is a finalist in this year's Groovy Soca Monarch Competition. Last year he only made it to the semifinals. For him the accomplishment is much more than just performing a song or winning a prize. It is living the reality of a spoken word for the Holy Cross College alumnus. Regarding his feelings about sharing the stage with big name soca acts such as Machel Montano, Sorzano said: "When I was eight my mother asked me what I wanted to do when I grow up and I told her I wanted to be a member of Xtatik. I never did make it to being a member, but today I have not only noted Machel as one of the artiste I look up to, but I am now also his colleague in soca and I think that speaks for itself. Words really do have power and I can say that I spoke this moment into being."
I am ready
No stranger to the stage, Sorzano is confident that his offering this year, titled Over You, will do well in the Groovy category come Carnival Friday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. "I am very confident with my song. I did a show at WoodFord Cafe on the 17, and the response was phenomenal. People know the song and can identify with the storyline in it-which is speaking of relationships, heartache, but also cheerfulness once you get behind that Carnival truck," Sorzano revealed. He also has much to be happy about since Over You won't be the only song heard on that night from Sorzano. He will also shine through JW and Blaze as they perform We Time, one of his compositions. You can also hear his work in Kees and Michelle Xavier's Head Bad On D Road, co-written by the 27 year-old.
Soca Monarch excellent platform
Sorzano has undeniably grown since his Synergy Soca Star days. With numerous recordings and several releases, the journey is so much better than the prize. So what can we expect from this focused "cat?" A brilliant performance as he takes his place on the stage for Groovy Soca Monarch 2012. "Soca Monarch is about T&T, selling T&T's most unique product-soca to the world. The genre that is soca has not been fully explored, it has been flirted with many times but still not getting that breakthrough it needs. "The Soca Monarch Competition is a very good platform because the world is watching and T&T has been making waves on the international circuit with ambassadors like Anya Ayoung-Chee, so we know the world has its eye on us to see what else is coming from this twin island. "I am going to do my best on that night because I also want to be a forerunner in that band."
