Local scientist to lecture on environmental careers

Trinidad and To­ba­go na­tion­al and mem­ber of the No­bel Peace Prize win­ning In­ter­gov­ern­men­tal Pan­el on Cli­mate Change, Dr Roger S Pul­warty, will de­liv­er a lec­ture to young adults on ca­reers in En­vi­ron­men­tal Sci­ence at the Young Adult Li­brary, Na­tion­al Li­brary, Aber­cromy Street, Port-of-Spain to­day at 3 pm. A re­lease from the US Em­bassy said the lec­ture was part of its con­tin­u­ing ac­tiv­i­ties as­so­ci­at­ed with its Sci­ence Cor­ner at the Na­tion­al Li­brary. Dr Pul­warty, a for­mer stu­dent of Pre­sen­ta­tion Col­lege, is chief of the Cli­mate and So­ci­etal In­ter­ac­tions Di­vi­sion and di­rec­tor of the US Na­tion­al In­te­grat­ed Drought In­for­ma­tion Sys­tem at the Na­tion­al Ocean­ic and At­mos­pher­ic Ad­min­is­tra­tion (NOAA) in Boul­der, Col­orado and Wash­ing­ton DC. His re­search and pub­li­ca­tions fo­cus on cli­mate, im­pacts as­sess­ment and adap­ta­tion in the Unit­ed States, Latin Amer­i­ca and the Caribbean. He is a lead au­thor on sev­er­al na­tion­al and in­ter­na­tion­al cli­mate as­sess­ments re­ports, in­clud­ing the 2007 UN In­ter­gov­ern­men­tal Pan­el on Cli­mate Change (IPCC)-the re­cip­i­ent of the 2007 No­bel Peace Prize; the IPCC Spe­cial Re­port on Man­ag­ing the Risks of Ex­treme Events and Dis­as­ters (2012) and the US Glob­al Change Re­search Pro­gram.

Dr Pul­warty has act­ed in ad­vi­so­ry ca­pac­i­ties on cli­mate, nat­ur­al re­sources and dis­as­ter risk re­duc­tion to sev­er­al in­ter­na­tion­al in­ter­ests, in­clud­ing Cari­com; the gov­ern­ments of Fi­ji, Por­tu­gal, Venezuela, Chile; the Or­gan­i­sa­tion of Amer­i­can States; the UNDP; UN­EP and the World Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Or­gan­i­sa­tion. He led the Vul­ner­a­bil­i­ty and Ca­pac­i­ty As­sess­ment Com­po­nent of the World Bank-GEF fund­ed project for Cari­com on Main­stream­ing Adap­ta­tion to Cli­mate Change in the Caribbean. He has served on sci­ence ad­vi­so­ry com­mit­tees of the US Na­tion­al Acad­e­my of Sci­ences, NASA and the En­vi­ron­men­tal Pro­tec­tion Agency. He has been fea­tured in sev­er­al me­dia com­mu­ni­ca­tions, in­clud­ing the New York Times mag­a­zine ar­ti­cle "The Fu­ture is Dry­ing Up." He is a co-re­cip­i­ent of the 2008 NOAA Ad­min­is­tra­tor's award, and the 2010 De­part­ment of Com­merce Gold Medal, for out­stand­ing achieve­ments in in­te­grat­ing sci­en­tif­ic re­search in­to pub­lic de­ci­sion-mak­ing.
