The new Guapo Beach Facility, a $7.2 million investment by LNG production company Atlantic, was officially handed over on Tuesday to the Point Fortin Borough Corporation. A release from Atlantic said the facility was built thorough a partnership between Atlantic, the Point Fortin Borough Corporation and Habitat for Humanity Trinidad and Tobago. The facility will be owned and managed by the Point Fortin Borough Corporation. Feature speaker at the handover event, Tourism Minister Dr Rupert Griffith said that the new beach facility provided locals and tourists with a destination for beach and social activities, particularly during the Point Fortin Borough Day festivities.
"The project represents a long-term investment in the future of one of south Trinidad's most popular seaside beach areas," Griffith said. Nigel Darlow, CEO, Atlantic said that the LNG company embarked on the beach facility project in order to make an important contribution to the fabric of community life in Point Fortin. "We envisioned a space where generations of Point Fortin children could play, and where family life and community life could be nurtured," Darlow said. "The Guapo Beach Facility will help to facilitate economic development not only in this community, but also in the entire Southwest Peninsula and wider Trinidad and Tobago. "There are opportunities here to develop sustainable small businesses. With excellent marketing, there are also opportunities to create a new gateway for tourism.
Habitat for Humanity Trinidad and Tobago was the project manager for the facility's construction.
