Nine young people were honoured on May 28 when the Seafood Industry Development Company Ltd (SIDC) held its prize-giving ceremony for winners of the company's first ever Seafood Awareness competition. The competition was held during March and April and was open to young people between the ages of eight and 17. The top three winners for the age group eight to 11 were first place winner Shania Williams of Carapichaima RC School; Rayanne Nagapen, second, of Waterloo Presbyterian School; and Valini Roopnarine of Clark Rochard Government School who placed third. The topic was Why should I eat fish?
In the age group 12 to 15 the top three winners were, first, Faith Tyson of Iere High School; secong, Netenya Keil of Bishop Anstey high School, Port-of-Spain; and third was Marianna Lalgee of Naparima Girls' High School. Their topic was Good quality and poor quality seafood: Ways to recognise the difference. Jerome Singh of Presentation College in San Fernando, who placed first in the 16 to 17 age group, was the lone male winner in the competition. In second place was Sharona Badree of Fyzabad Anglican Secondary; and in third place was Deirdre Subran-Ganesh of Holy Faith Convent, Couva. Their topic was From Hook to Cook: Best practices for seafood vending.
