Many grooms are at a loss about their clothing choices for their wedding. As a result some relinquish these choices to the brides who, in many cases, willingly make the decisions for them. It's no wonder some guys are confused, there are just as many components for their wardrobe as for the bride-to-be.
Suit or tuxedo
Formal weddings usually require the groom to be in either a black, white or ivory tuxedo, complete with tuxedo accessories such as: the tuxedo vest, tie, cummerbund, tuxedo shirt, stud set (four tiny studs used instead of buttons on a formal shirt) and trousers. Some grooms may find that it is more practical to rent a tuxedo rather than purchase one that they will never wear again. On the occasion of a semi-formal or evening wedding, the groom can choose to wear a dark suit with a co-ordinating tie. Suit colours that could be good choices are: navy blue, charcoal grey or black. For cocktail receptions, grooms can also wear dark suits and ties. Morning weddings lend themselves to a light-coloured suit for men or even a blazer with slacks and a tie. Beach wedding attire for the groom can range from a blazer, shirt and khakis or even linen shirts and shorts. Naturally, grooms having certain religious wedding ceremonies will follow the customary clothing worn.
Neckwear, vests, waistcoats
Neckwear can range from the traditional tuxedo tie, an ascot tie, coloured bow ties or a long-necktie. The latter is a less formal choice. Tie choices, just like vests and waistcoats, should be made in an elegant fabric such as: satin, brocade or silk. Neck ties can be co-ordinated or even contrasted with the colour scheme of the wedding.
Cummerbund
This band of pleated fabric is worn around the waist instead of a vest or waistcoat. The classic colour is black but other colours can also be worn.
Jewelry
Nothing will make a worst impression than tarnished jewelry! Ensure cuff links are polished and that they complement your watch, ring or tie tack (if applicable).
Shoes and socks
Tuxedos require patent leather shoes. The classic tuxedo shoe features a rounded toe, however, the square-toed shoe has also become very fashionable. Grooms should ensure their shoes are well-polished and free from scuffs and dirt. As a rule, socks should be worn in shades that complement both the trousers and shoes. This creates a seamless and elegant look from head to toe.
Boutonniere
Boutonnieres are traditionally worn on the left lapel. The groom should also wear a different flower than his groomsmen. For a co-ordinated look, a flower-type (eg rose, orchid, lily, tube-rose etc) that is already in the bride's bouquet should be used. The groom's boutonniere should not exceed four inches, including the stem.
