Earlier this year Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley, sponsored a Carnival Art competition which was open to students of the seven public primary schools in his constituency - Diego Martin Boys RC, Diego Martin Girls' RC, La Puerta Government School, Point Cumana Government School, Point Cumana RC, Carenage Girls' Government and Carenage Boys' Government School. The competition targeted two age groups-five to seven and eight to 12. The students were provided with the required art supplies and were asked to produce a work of art inspired by Carnival.
Dr Rowley says he firmly believes in the importance of art and music in shaping well rounded minds and has seen first hand the positive impact that art has had on both his daughters. The pieces were judged by artist Liz Gardner. The first, second and third place prizes included books and arts and craft supplies. A special prize was awarded to the overall winner, Russel Domingo of Carenage Boys Government School for his wire crafted sailor presentation.
