Daniyel Jones of Martini Makers is among the finalists vying to be the top of the mixologists at Rumfest.

Trinidad and Tobago’s top mixologists will put forth their best boozy concoctions at the finals of the Trinidad leg of the Mixmaster Challenge today at the first day of the three-day Rum Festival at the House of Angostura. Ten finalists will compete for the opportunity to win $10,000 and to represent Trinidad and Tobago in the Angostura® Aromatic Bitters Global Cocktail Challenge 2013, which takes place on February 10—Carnival Sunday. The current Mixmaster Carla Cupid from Hyatt Regency Hotel faces competition from Keisha Antoine of Studio 66, Ravi Maharaj of Rosscos, Tyrone Benjamin from the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre, Daniyel Jones of Martini Makers, Russel Mendes of Shakers, Cerron Banfield from Studio 66, Keiran Benjamin from Zanzibar, Kester Blake of Professional Trendy Bartenders and Alicia Cox from the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre.

During several heats held every Saturday at Shakers from August 11 to September 1, approximately 50 budding bartenders from around Trinidad and Tobago, were able to gain experience in mixing cocktails using Angostura aromatic bitters, in keeping with the international rules of the competition. Other Mixmaster competitions have already taken place in other parts of the Caribbean—Kendie Browne will be representing St Kitts Nevis, Karen Morris for Grenada, Vince Roban for St Vincent, Hanna Annerville for St Lucia and Rohan Hackshaw will represent Barbados. Antigua will choose a representative on September 21 and Jamaica on September 29. Angostura sees these competitions as great opportunities for young bartenders and mixologists throughout the Caribbean to hone in their talents and develop their skills for the future benefit of the trade and the industry at large.
