This year, orange is it! The Pantone Colour Institute has named "Tangerine Tango," as its colour of the year for 2012. It can be described as "a bold, reddish-orange." This pop of colour fits well with both retro and modern wedding themes and has been a hit this year as an accent colour for wedding décor, bridesmaid dresses and on wedding cakes. If orange is too bright for you, try the more subtle shade of coral. Last year, the Pantone colour was called "Honeysuckle"-a deep pink; and in 2010, turquoise was all the rage.
Here are some trends I have been seeing regarding the use of wedding colours this year:
• An increasing use of neutral base colours
In the past, the neutral colours that were largely used were white and ivory. Today's brides are now choosing more modern neutrals such as black, khaki, navy and shades of grey such as: pewter, slate and charcoal. Neutrals are also being paired with "citrusy" colours such as lemon and lime green.
• Moving towards "vintage" colours
Colours that evoke bygone eras, shabby chic and romanticism are now in vogue. These are: peaches, blush pinks, periwinkle, olive green, dusty blues, bronze, silver, pale gold, mint green and jade green.
• "The colour purple"
Purple remains a popular colour choice this year. For a more toned down effect, brides are using lavender. A richer and more sophisticated look can be had with using a deeper shade, such as "eggplant." Purple, eggplant and lavender all pair well with tangerine, as well as with most of the "vintage" colours.
• Unusual colour trios
–Royal blue, white, hot pink
–Coral, lime green and khaki
–Yellow, grey and white
–Aquamarine, peach and white
When selecting your colours, always be yourself, and don't be afraid to break with tradition. Your guests will be delighted by a wedding that is not the "same old!"
