This year, or­ange is it! The Pan­tone Colour In­sti­tute has named "Tan­ger­ine Tan­go," as its colour of the year for 2012. It can be de­scribed as "a bold, red­dish-or­ange." This pop of colour fits well with both retro and mod­ern wed­ding themes and has been a hit this year as an ac­cent colour for wed­ding d&ea­cute;cor, brides­maid dress­es and on wed­ding cakes. If or­ange is too bright for you, try the more sub­tle shade of coral. Last year, the Pan­tone colour was called "Hon­ey­suck­le"-a deep pink; and in 2010, turquoise was all the rage.

Here are some trends I have been see­ing re­gard­ing the use of wed­ding colours this year:

• An in­creas­ing use of neu­tral base colours

In the past, the neu­tral colours that were large­ly used were white and ivory. To­day's brides are now choos­ing more mod­ern neu­trals such as black, kha­ki, navy and shades of grey such as: pewter, slate and char­coal. Neu­trals are al­so be­ing paired with "cit­rusy" colours such as lemon and lime green.

• Mov­ing to­wards "vin­tage" colours

Colours that evoke by­gone eras, shab­by chic and ro­man­ti­cism are now in vogue. These are: peach­es, blush pinks, peri­win­kle, olive green, dusty blues, bronze, sil­ver, pale gold, mint green and jade green.

• "The colour pur­ple"

Pur­ple re­mains a pop­u­lar colour choice this year. For a more toned down ef­fect, brides are us­ing laven­der. A rich­er and more so­phis­ti­cat­ed look can be had with us­ing a deep­er shade, such as "egg­plant." Pur­ple, egg­plant and laven­der all pair well with tan­ger­ine, as well as with most of the "vin­tage" colours.

• Un­usu­al colour trios

–Roy­al blue, white, hot pink

–Coral, lime green and kha­ki

–Yel­low, grey and white

–Aqua­ma­rine, peach and white

When se­lect­ing your colours, al­ways be your­self, and don't be afraid to break with tra­di­tion. Your guests will be de­light­ed by a wed­ding that is not the "same old!"
