Ventures Hockey Club recently began celebrations of its 85th anniversary with a service at St Mary's College Chapel, Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain. The sermon was delivered by Decan Derek Walcott, who reminded the audience that he could have been a member of the Club if he was allowed to wear a skirt, as he remembered his younger days playing and partying with the girls in green and white, and spending quite a lot of time with them on the St James Barracks ground.
Ventures is the oldest existing all-women's club in Trinidad and Tobago and is presently at the top of the standings at the Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board's National Indoor competition at the Woodbrook Youth Facility.
Among the members of the Club are the evergreen Florrie Kelshall, former national captains Sandra Charles-Montano, Cheryl Evans, Paddy Fernandes-Williams and Cristina Abreu, and FIH international umpires mother and daughter Cherill (ret.) and Ayanna McClean. The celebrations will continue with a gala awards dinner and presentation function in December and the 10th anniversary of the Club's invitation international indoor tournament, scheduled for early January 2013.
