Children of the Couva Children's Home and Crisis Nursery and their adult chaperones witnessed history come alive on October 13 when they were treated to a tour of the Maha Sabha Indian Caribbean Museum, Waterloo. Hosted by blink|bmobile, the tour was the first for the youngsters.
The museum features authentic artifacts dating as far back as the early 1900's. The museum opened its doors to the public in 2006 with the support of TSTT and other sponsors. The children got the opportunity to view traditional Indian jewelry, pieces of clothing, ancient photographs-some over 100 years old, as well as a collection of Hindu and other texts.
They also viewed East Indian artifacts and agricultural objects such as a dheki (used for pounding cocoa and coffee beans as well as corn and rice grains), rare musical instruments like the sarangi (Indian violin) and tabla (a pair of East Indian drums). Following the tour, the children were treated to some traditional Indian delicacies courtesy of the museum.
