University of the West Indies' (UWI's) "Team X of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering has won the Teleios Code Jam competition finals, which took place last week at the JFK auditorium, Five teams from UWI and SBCS presented before a panel of judges from Teleios Systems, Illuminat and Microsoft to win the $8,000 first prize.
This year's theme, Is there an App for that? challenged students to create solutions that meet the needs of problems faced in the sectors of health, agriculture, finance, security and education.
Team X-Darryl Grant, Kevan St Brice, Emeka Farrier-made a big impression with a Transit Management and Information Portal for the PTSC.
They also won all three stage prizes, and copped the prize for the Most Innovative Solution from platinum sponsor Illuminat.
Second place went to UWI's Team Cache, who won $6,000 for their blood glucose level monitoring and notification system for citizens with diabetes.
Team Semblance from SBCS placed third, winning $4,000 for their solution of a Web based interactive emulator for the Android smartphone platform which teaches people how to perform basic functions on an Android phone.
Digicel also awarded a special prize for the idea that is best suited as a mobile application, which went to UWI?Team Code Conquerors for their school book list solution, which would assist parents in finding books for their children more easily. Now in its fourth year, Teleios Code Jam competition has grown significantly since its first time in 2008.
This year saw increased participation from the ICT industry-such as platinum sponsor Illuminat, gold sponsors Microsoft, InvesTT and First Citizens, and silver sponsors Fujitsu and Digicel.
Participants also had the opportunity to interact with the sponsors at their booths, including special one-on-one meetings to discuss potential job opportunities in the industry.
