The holistic development of a child has become a major point of focus in recent years. Even Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh, since taking up office in 2010, has pointed out the importance of extra curricular activities going hand in hand with academics.
Last year, the T&T Guardian featured a number of holistic camps for children along the East West Corridor.
This year, we shine the spotlight on the Happy Campers Holistic Camp founded by media and communications specialist Tamara Williams and physical trainer Aslamyer Muhammed.
Based in South Trinidad, the camp is a biannual consortium of activities geared toward the holistic development of children in a safe and fun-filled space, with an attempt to teach universal positive values that encourage healthy communication and respect.
In a telephone interview, Williams said the camp is being hosted during school breaks for Easter and August vacations for children between the ages of three and a half to eight years old.
The urban radio announcer, who was born and raised in La Brea, said the idea for the camp came about because there was a genuine need for such a camp in southern T&T.
"There aren't many of these types of camps or similar activities available to children in South to facilitate them during their vacation breaks," she said.
Williams said that she and Muhammed, both parents, had also always wanted to help in the positive development of children.
She added that, as a mother, she was not pleased with the kind of children's programmes available on television nowadays.
"While it is important for children to learn technology, it is equally important to teach them constructive thinking and how to focus–things that can easily be achieved by going back to some of the basics.
"You don't want your child glued to the iPad and computer all the time because many of them have exceptional talent and it is only recognised at times through non-academic activities.
"It is really providing a home away from home. That is the sense of security we offer working parents who rely on institutions during this time to look after their children."
