The Russell Latapy Secondary School in Morvant copped $10,000 in the Angostura "Create Your Dream Eco-friendly Home" poster competition. The awards ceremony was held at the House of Angostura on World Environment Day, June 5.Success Laventille Secondary School won both the $5,000 second prize and the $3,000 third prize.
According to a release from Angostura Ltd, the competition was a corporate social responsibility initiative by the company. The poster competition required Forms Four and Five secondary students from the Laventille/Morvant area to create eco-friendly homes using designs that must be realistic. They were allowed to use many environmental or "green" initiatives as possible. Both individual and group entries were allowed. The competition was judged by Vidia Persad-Doodnath, executive director, technical services at Angostura Ltd and Cheryl Blanc of Horizons Art Gallery.
Russell Latapy had two individual entries with the winning poster and replica of the eco-friendly house made by Moesha Benjamin and guided by her art teacher Mr Pierre. Success Laventille Secondary had two group entries and one individual.The students were guided by Mrs Boodasingh and Ms Griffith. The prizes for Most Creative and the use of Most number of Green Elements were won by Success Laventille. All students who participated received an LLB hamper from the company.
