Delicious and visually stimulating, the one-day-only artisan sale Bits and Pieces features totally local artwork, furniture, craft and gourmet food. Not your average housewife's craft, stroll through this exciting exhibit to discover and buy paintings, carvings, leather goods, jewelry, accessories, home furnishings, ceramics and curios, large and small. With a focus on handmade but sophisticated pieces from Trinidad and Tobago, the show has also expanded to artisans from St Lucia displaying new works especially for this sale.Of 110 exhibitor-vendors, about 25 are cottage industry gourmet foods and preserves (chutneys, sauces and other condiments) that are delectable but not usually available at chain supermarkets.
A lively, well-organised fair with a festive feel, the show attracted 1,200 shoppers in 2012. Event coordinator and mosaic artist Vanessa Dalla Costa sets a high standard when selecting future participants.Always encouraging new talent, Dalla-Costa effuses enthusiasm about new featured makers and original designers, including a "charred wood" emblazoner and a master quilter whose work you just have to see for yourself. Bits and Pieces will be enjoying its sixth year this November. If you go, look for new paintings by Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe (2011) Gabrielle Walcott and silver jewelry by Trinidadian Janice Derrick, whose designs featured in UK Vogue and Harper's and Queen.
