"Do the right thing because it is the right thing to do," a quote taken from President Anthony Carmona's speech. A statement that is simple yet profound. Simple yet profound epitomises the character of President Carmona. On October 6, the Law Society invited our president to be the featured speaker for the Eminent Speakers Lecture 2014 on the topic, Law as a Tool of Social Corporate Responsibility. President Carmona stood at the podium as a fountain of scholarly knowledge as he explored the law's role as a protective yet permissive tool to achieve corporate social responsibility. He reinforced the need for legislation and good practice to prevent repeats of the failures of the Hindu Credit Union (HCU) among other financial institutions. After the event, he warmed our hearts as he ensured he met every member of our T&T Student Association (TTSA) Executive before posing for a much cherished picture.
PS: The T&T Executive hopes President Carmona enjoys his gift.
Integration
The Cave Hill Campus is not only the home campus for Barbadian nationals but also the Eastern Caribbean States. As such the campus benefits from a rich blend of nationalities and cultures. Islands are represented by the respective Island Associations. Island Associations are registered with the Guild of Students and are given a week to treat the campus to different aspects of their culture.St Kitts and Nevis (SKNSA), Antigua and Barbuda (ABSA) and Belizean (Belsac) students shared the week of September 21 to 27. During this week the campus was treated to a cultural show, expo, food day and much anticipated Union Social in the Guild of Students. The goat water (soup) from SKNSA, pepperpot (ABSA) and burrito from Belsac made my week.
Halls of Residences Week (September 28 to October 4) which is customarily themed Unity Week, ironically saw a week of activities which entailed Blocks and Floors of the three halls in competition. Competition was uniquely used to achieve integration. In the first instance, Block and Floor members are forced to work together to produce culinary, cultural, entrepreneurial and sporting brilliance.
A highlight for me was a dramatic piece done by Olympus (Top B Floor) on Sherlock Hall depicted a class titled Caribbean Integration 101. The class was difficult to control and included different regional nationalities which were identified by the audience because of mimicked accents. The teacher eventually left the class and threatened only to return when the class worked out their differences on their own. It seemed like an insurmountable task and as soon as calm was being restored, another student personifying Haiti arrived. The class was at odds on whether or not to accept this most recent addition.
Their message was that the Caribbean ought to remember the sacrifices Haiti endured as the first Caribbean state to gain Independence from colonial powers.Dominica (Domsac), St Lucia (Lusac) and Debate Society student associations also combined to present an eventful week of activities from October 5 to 11.The two territories also collaborated to stage Dario and The La Jablesse at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination. TTSA proudly participated in the Inter Island Associations Debate hosted by the Debate Society.
Advice
We are in the seventh week of the semester and half of the semester has elapsed. Further, the exam timetable has already been released and general cry of the student population is, "time to get serious about life."
