Local artist Jason Sebastian de Lancey was among a group of rising stars from around the world to be featured at the Art Love New York global art fair, last week, in Manhattan, New York.
An honours graduate of UWI Visual Arts, de Lancey had his abstract pieces showcased from May 13 17 at several locations in downtown Manhattan alongside artists from Germany, Vietnam, Ghana and the USA.
The San Juan-born artist, however, says there is little time to stop and enjoy the achievement as he presses toward his ultimate goal of gaining recognition on the world stage.
"It's a sip of water during a marathon," de Lancey said in a release.
It was a great opportunity and everything went well, but it's difficult for me to enjoy these moments. I usually just continue calculating moves or self-critique."
The artist, who is also part of a local exhibit currently on display at Central Bank, now turns his attention on completing his persona non grata art project. His work will again be on display at UWI locally later this month.
"In my work, I bring enquiries to culture and social environments. When questioning such constructs, bending rules is sometimes necessary to communicate viewpoints. Are these paintings an investigation into geometric form? Yes.
However, they have an innate property: in my practice, these paintings signal a milestone in negotiating a visual presence that relates the need for idiosyncrasy," he said of the upcoming exhibit.
Artists and galleries from around the world are invited by Art Love New York to participate twice a year at alternative art events in the Chelsea District of New York City. It is an incredible opportunity for emerging talent to showcase their work on a highly-respected and widely-visible platform.
