The Continuum Dance Project has been invited by the Limon Roots Afro Cultural Festival–an international festival in Costa Rica–to represent and receive an award on behalf of T&T at the Festival, which is this year dedicated to T&T. The Awards ceremony takes place on August 27, but a lack of funding support may mean Continuum won't be there to receive the award.
The Festival's letter of invitation to Continuum said: ".... this year the Festival will be dedicated to the Republic of T&T, bearing in mind the great values ??of your distinguished country, the solidarity with our activities over the years and as the country in the Caribbean with the most sustainable, successful and ongoing relationship with Costa Rica and our Caribbean province of Limon. We are interested in the presence of Continuum Dance Project as a special guest at Limon Roots during the ceremony at which we will present the award to the Republic of T&T."
While the Festival will cover other expenses, Continuum needs to raise $35,000 to cover the airfare for dancers.
"This is a great opportunity for us to connect with the people of Costa Rica, but funding has been so painfully slow that we've had to reduce the number of dancers from the original nine to seven, and even then, that has been a daunting task," said Sonja Dumas, artistic director of Continuum. "We're asking for help to give members of the company the opportunity to participate In this important cultural event.
"What is even more compelling is that they are honouring T&T this year, so it's even more important for us to have a presence."
Dance Project Continuum has created and performed contemporary expressions of dance and theatre for the last 11 years, blurring the boundaries of dance and theater. It is a laboratory to explore contemporary Caribbean movement.
In addition to requesting support from corporate T&T or government, the company has launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds, which can be accessed through its Facebook page, Continuum Dance Project.
