Women in Action for the Needy and Destitute (Wand) will continue to build on the group's past work and have set two major objectives for 2016–the construction of a Restorative Retreat at Coora Camp for individuals transitioning from substance abuse and to continue their support of youth programmes in at-risk communities.
Following its Annual General Meeting and board meeting on Thursday at Glencoe, which was also attended by newly inducted members, Wand said, "For 2016 and beyond we are resolute that all our efforts, with your support, will improve the well-being of our communities, and we will faithfully continue to serve and elevate our citizens in need."
The 2015 executive board members presented themselves for re-election and were reinstated unanimously: Jan Bocas-Ryan, president; Gloria Nelson, secretary; Michal Andrews, treasurer; and Karen Lee Lum, public relations officer.
Bocas-Ryan reflected on 2015's work and accomplishments, and outlined plans for the future. She spoke about the generous support of their many donors, both corporate and private, loyal patrons, and the media for taking their message to the wider public.
In 2015 Wand filled its board complement by welcoming two new members. They also inducted nine other members to the foundation, amplifying their sphere of support and bringing fresh new perspectives as they engage in succession planning to ensure the group's longevity.
Wand said that on behalf of the foundation, this new group of nine women hosted their first fund-raiser for the Just Because Foundation with resounding success.
In 2015 Wand was also able to provide assistance to The Credo Foundation, Marion Villa, Sri Jayalakshmi Children's Home, The Morris Marshall Homework Centre, and individuals in need.
