Pundit Narin Tewarie has appealed to the Hindu community to reflect on the past 171 years and see if they can do better to maintain the dignity, tolerance and discipline of their ancestors who came from India to work on the sugarcane plantations.
He said in good and bad times they endured and never lost hope, but prayed and believed in God and were successful in their goals. One of their goals, he said, was to ensure their children got an education and assist in the development of T&T.
Tewarie said they toiled in the fields and never gave up on their religion or culture, which was the base for their discipline and survival. He urged them to follow in the footsteps of their ancestors.
Tewarie was speaking at Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha North East Regional Council Indian Arrival Day Celebration 2016 at the Sant Nagar Hindu Temple, Ojoe Road, Sangre Grande, on Thursday night.
Tewarie said based on the quality of performances by the pupils of Sangre Grande Hindu School, who entertained with songs, dance and the playing of instruments, he was positive that the culture and teaching of their ancestors are in good hands.
Principal of the Sangre Grande Hindu School Sharmain Maharaj came in for high praises for the professional performances by her pupils.
