This week we continue with our month-long feature of the work of our donors and the contributions they have made to Alta over the years. These contributions have kept Alta up and running, sponsored projects and programmes and ensured that thousands of people benefit from free literacy classes around the country.
Today we feature Republic Bank Limited, a company which has given much to Alta over the years. Republic Bank is one of the largest and most profitable banks in the English-speaking Caribbean, with branches in Grenada and Barbados.
With a mission to provide efficient services and set the standard of excellence in customer satisfaction and social responsibility, Republic Bank has undoubtedly contributed much to our national development.
Through their Power to make a Difference initiative, Republic Bank engages in humanitarian initiatives with programmes which spread awareness of autism and cancer, assist the disabled, alleviate poverty and tackle literacy and youth development.
They have worked with various non governmental and community based organisations such as the Loveuntil Foundation and Two Cents Movement.
Republic Bank Limited has been a consistent source of funding for Alta over the past ten years via the Power to Make a Difference initiative.
Through Republic Bank, Alta has been able to execute interventions around the country which included the introduction of trained tutors to provide Alta instruction to beneficiaries, as well as the training of in-house staff to teach the Alta programme.
Interventions were executed at Rebirth House drug rehabilitation centre where persons dealing with addiction benefitted from improved reading and writing skills, in addition to traditional rehabilitative methods. This programme sought to strengthen participants' ability to cope with re-integration into everyday life, free from substance abuse.
An Alta Reading Circle programme and the traditional Alta classes were carried out with students with physical disabilities at Cheshire Home, while at the Arima Rehabilitation Centre; a Reading Circle was set up for the in-patient psychological care facility. After an initial Alta intervention, in-house facilitators were trained to facilitate the Reading Circle and inherited a growing library of reading material for student use.
Currently, Alta 's partnership with the Power to Make a Difference initiative involves class sponsorship of five venues along the East/West corridor, as well as all twelve of Alta's Reading Circles, which supplement what is taught in the community classes.
In addition to this, the Alta Online programme–still in its developmental stagesis also being funded by a generous grant from Republic Bank Limited. This programme will bring the Alta classroom to learners in a virtual, online setting.
With help from Republic Bank Limited, Alta is able to truly make a difference in the lives of non-readers in T&T.
