The National Trust of T&T is pleased to present its second annual "Vintage Calypso on Nelson Island" featuring Lord Superior and a full cast, in commemoration of Calypso History Month. This event takes place from 3 pm to 6 pm on Saturday, October 22 at the Nelson Island Heritage Site. Transport is provided from the San Fernando Water Taxi Terminal at 1:30 pm and the Port-of-Spain Water Taxi Terminal at 2:30pm.
The iconic Lord Superior–Andrew Marcano–was born in Rio Claro. "Supie", as he is fondly called, started singing calypso at age 16 with the Victory Calypso Tent in Port-of-Spain. Thereafter, he began performing at the Young Brigade Calypso Tent in 1956.
His fellow calypsonians would have included the Mighty Sparrow and King Fighter. In 2014, Lord Superior celebrated his Diamond Jubilee in calypso. Lord Superior is a multi-talented artiste, as he is a composer, guitarist and singer, and is also known for his extempo performances.
Supporting acts include Brother Valentino, Brother Mudada, Twiggy and Abebele. Brother Valentino, born Emorold Anthony Phillip, has been performing for over 50 years.
He started his illustrious career in 1961 in a calypso tent by the name of the "Big Bamboo", which was on Park Street in Port-of-Spain. His popular calypsoes over the years include the immortal Life is a Stage (1972) and Stay up Zimbabwe (1979). Alan Fortune, also known as Brother Mudada, was crowned the Veterans Calypso Monarch 2009.
The Trust is inviting everyone to come out and support our calypsonians in an evening of vintage calypso from the 50s to the 70s. Take the opportunity to learn about the Nelson Island heritage site and the Five Islands, and enjoy a relaxing evening of old time calypsoes.
