Residents living in the deep southern community of Avocat in Fyzabad were treated to a free cultural performance courtesy the Indian High Commission recently. Villagers gathered at the Shri Siddhi Vinayaaka Avocat Mandir to experience the intricate dance style of the people of Manipur, India.

Entitled, the Rhythms of Manipur, the show highlighted ten dance items that were performed by a visiting dance troupe from India.

The styles incorporated unique costumes, rapid drumming and dancing along with swordsmanship and martial arts as part of the repertoire. The performances showcased dances popular in several of Manipur’s districts. Chairman of the Siparia Regional Corporation Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh said he was too pleased to see the High Commission of India reaching out to several communities in rural T&T. He said the Siparia Regional Corporation was looking at ways to include more Indian cultural items in its popular Siparia Fest.

Manipuri dance is a religious art and its aim is the expression of spiritual values. Aspects of this performance art is celebrated during Hindu festivals and major rites of passage such as weddings among the Manipuri people, particularly in the ethnic majority of Meitei people.

The Manipuri dance is a team performance, with its own unique costumes, aesthetics, conventions and repertoire.

The Manipuri dance drama is, for most part, marked by a performance that is graceful and fluid with an emphasis on hand and upper body gestures. It is accompanied with devotional music created with many instruments.
