A special reserve police officer was on Friday granted $100,000 bail after appearing in court for allegedly robbing a man of $1,600 at a bar almost two years ago.
Officer Kevin Figaro, 46, appeared before Rio Claro Senior Magistrate Rae Roopchand charged with misbehaviour in public office.
He is on injury leave but was last attached to the Princes Town Police Station. Figaro was charged following a report made to the Professional Standards Bureau by Kendell Primus.
Primus alleged that on November 18, 2017, he was at Troy City Restaurant and Lounge in Princes Town playing the roulette machine when he was approached by the officer who took him to the washroom area.
Primus alleged that the officer and another man searched him and the officer took his money. Following investigations led by ACP Toteram Dookie, including Sgt Andell Rollocks, Cpl Lawrence Joefield and Cpl Ian Mitchell, Figaro was arrested on Thursday.
Figaro was charged by Mitchell after advice was sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Asking for bail, his attorney Petronilla Basdeo said Figaro, a father of three, has ten years service in the police force. However, she said he has been on sick leave since September 9, 2018. Basdeo said he is married and is a committee member of a youth soccer school.
The matter was adjourned to November 22.
