Two mourners escaped death after the car in which they were travelling crashed into an electricity pole at San Fernando as they were returning from a funeral at Mosquito Creek on Sunday.

The accident knocked out electricity in several parts of the city before it was finally restored hours later by a crew from the T&T Electricity Commission.

Doctors are currently treating Kishan Ramnath, 18 and Kevin Gill, 43, for multiple injuries sustained in the crash.

Police said around 1 pm, Gill, of Duncan Village, San Fernando, was driving a white Toyota Corolla when he lost control near the bus terminal on Lady Hailes Avenue. The car crashed head-on into the pole.

Luckily, both men were wearing their seatbelts. Gill suffered a broken hand and leg. Firefighters had to use a hydraulic cutting device to free the men from the wreckage. Both were rushed to the hospital situated a stone's throw away. The car was removed to the San Fernando Police station.
