Two motorcyclists died in separate road traffic accidents just hours apart yesterday morning.
The first crash occurred around 5 am along the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway near Peake’s Gas Station in Cocorite.
Investigators said the rider lost control of the motorcycle and collided with a vehicle.
He was thrown onto the roadway and died at the scene.
The westbound lanes were temporarily shut down, causing traffic congestion during the morning rush hour. Police have not yet released his identity.
A second fatal crash followed just after 7 am along the Cumuto Main Road.
The victim has been identified as 42-year-old Keone Brathwaite of Chaguanas, a motor vehicle officer with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
Police said Brathwaite was involved in a head-on collision with an SUV. Footage circulating on social media appears to show the SUV overtaking a truck before entering his lane.
He was thrown into nearby bushes and died at the scene.
Investigations are ongoing into both incidents.
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation extended condolences on Brathwaite’s passing via a press release.
The ministry described Brathwaite as serving with dedication, professionalism and commitment to the transport sector, and extended sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues during what it called a difficult time.
