Strong winds associated with the passage of Hurricane Tomas have caused the shutdown of several of the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) water production facilities in Tobago. The shutdown was brought about by a combination of factors, such as high turbidity, clogged intakes and electrical failure, a WASA release yesterday stated.
WASA work crews brought back several of the plants into operation on Sunday but a few still remained out of service, the release added. King's Bay Water Treatment Plant, Hillsborough West and Highlands Road Water Treatment Plant and the Charlotteville Intake are still down. The release added: "As a consequence, the water supply to customers in Delaford, King's Bay, Speyside, Charlottesville's high points, Hope, John Dial, Bacolet and Mason Hall's high areas has been affected."
The authority was working on restoring the supply to the affected areas by tomorrow, the release added. It said WASA had been providing a limited truck-borne water supply to customers who also were encouraged to call 639 WASA (9272). The release said the Richmond, Courland and Bloody Bay Water Treatment Plants have been brought back into operation by WASA work crews.
