Port-of-Spain Mayor Louis Lee Sing is facing a major challenge, it seems. Lee Sing, bent on ridding the city's streets of homeless people, had his workers from the Port-of-Spain City Corporation pick up several of them on two recent occasions. Some 84 men and two women were picked up last Thursday evening by corporation workers and the police on St Vincent and Chacon Streets and Western Main Road, St James.
They appeared before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar and Senior Magistrate Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan on charges of loitering and possession of cocaine apparatus. Some were freed, others were granted bail and some were remanded to the St Ann's Hospital. However, despite the mayor's best efforts, a number of homeless people were seen doing what they usually do on different streets in the city yesterday, quite unperturbed by anything.
