The Ministry of Trade and Industry has appointed boards for two of the agencies under its purview - the Trinidad and Tobago Entertainment Company Ltd (TTEnt) and the Trinidad and Tobago Racing Authority (TTRA). Instruments of appointment were presented to the new chairmen and board members at the ministry's head office, Nicholas Towers, by Trade and Industry Minister Stephen Cadiz.
In his remarks to the new TTEnt Board, Cadiz stressed that its mandate was to ensure the development of a commercially viable entertainment industry that could generate revenues, not just locally, but internationally, and functions with long-term vision. He stressed the importance of entertainment in terms of diversification and emphasised all board decisions had to withstand public scrutiny.
The same message was echoed for the TTRA board, where Cadiz reaffirmed that Government had mandated the board to come up with solutions to address the challenges facing the local horse racing industry, which provided employment and entertainment and had critical links with other sectors.
In addition, said the minister, for the horse racing industry to continue it had to prove itself as a viable entity, since taxpayers could not be expected to support the sector if it could not generate revenue. In his response on behalf of the new TTRA board, chairman Dereck Chin expressed the sentiment that the members were pleased to serve and were committed to removing obstacles and to attract greater investment into horse racing.
