Chaguanas mayor Orlando Nagessar was overjoyed on Friday night when the twinning of the Borough of Chaguanas with the city of Lauderhill, Florida, was finally completed. The keys to the borough were presented to Lauderhill City mayor Richard Kaplan and Dale Holness, Commissioner for Broward County, Florida, during a formal ceremony at the Chaguanas Borough Hall. The twinning process started almost a decade ago but was stopped by the previous administration. It was restarted when the People’s Partnership government got into power.

On November 30, Nagessar and a delegation from T&T received the keys to Lauderhill when they visited Florida. Nagessar said the twinning came at a time when Chaguanas was rising to city status and was ripe with investment opportunities. He said he hoped to take a cricket team to Broward County to play a match at world-class cricketing facilities. He said he hoped to see sporting and cultural exchanges taking place since Lauderhill is home to many T&T nationals and other West Indians.

The mayor said T&T nationals living in Florida have already started investing in central Trinidad. A recording company owned by a T&T national has even started offering lower rates to local artistes. “The way the world is going we must start thinking globally and outside the box in order to reap cultural and economic benefits,” Nagessar said, adding that keys represented the warmth from the heart of the burgess.
