A Cedros businessman, accused of obtaining close to $10,000 worth of wild meat and $16,300 worth of frozen goods by issuing fraudulent cheques, has been granted $25,000 bail. Deodath Chickurie, 42, of Bonasse Village, Cedros, appeared in the San Fernando First Court before deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington charged with two counts of fraud.
Chickurie was arrested and charged with intent to defraud Deo's Marketing Ltd, Rousillac, on December 12 by obtaining a quantity of frozen goods, including shrimp, tattoo and agouti, together valued $9,995, by falsely pretending a $10,000 Republic Bank Ltd, Princes Town cheque, dated December 10, 2010, was a good and valid payment for the items.
The businessman also was charged with intent to defraud Vasha Foods, Freeport, by obtaining frozen goods, including two chicken patties, cheese and 1,300 lbs of salmon fillets, together valued $15,958.50, by pretending that a $16,300 Republic Bank Ltd, Princes Town, cheque, dated September 29, 2010, was a good and valid payment for the items.
Both cheques were drawn from the account of Nellex Rental Co Ltd. Attorney Frank Seepersad, who represented Chickurie, applied for bail. He said the 42-year-old operated a fish business and had two previous convictions which, he said, were eight and ten years old. Wellington granted Chickurie bail and adjourned the matter to December 29.
