The Ministry of Health wishes to share a few tips for a health and safe holiday season to maintain ones health and that of their loved ones this Christmas.
Practice road safety
• Follow the rules of safe driving, stay within the speed limit, don't drink and drive and use a designated driver.
Choose safe food
• When eating out, choose vendors and establishments that are clean and provide proper hand-washing facilities. Look for the food badge. Vendors with food badges are monitored by the ministry;
• food for sale should be kept at the right temperature to prevent the growth of bacteria and spoilage. Foods that need refrigeration should be kept in the fridge or on ice;
• avoid buying raw or uncooked food as these can be a potential source of infection;
• when at home practice safe food practices. Cook meats and fish thoroughly, serve food piping hot and use warmers or insulated containers to maintain the temperature; and,
• if food is left to stand at room temperature, use within two hours. Store leftovers in small portions in the fridge and use them within three days.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle
•Avoid smoking and alcohol use;
• eat in moderation. Eat smaller balanced meals, inclusive of fruit and vegetables. Reduce the intake of sugar, salt and fatty foods; and,
•keep up your physical activity routine.
