Richards: Let’s all follow his example
Sir Ellis Clarke was a most outstanding and dedicated patriot who served T&T with unswerving commitment. In his statement on the former president’s passing, president George Maxwell Richards said he was deeply saddened to hear the news. Richards said: “He contributed significantly to laying the foundations on which this country would be built—as diplomat, in the law, as last Governor General of independent Trinidad and Tobago, as an architect of our Republic Constitution and as first President of the Republic of Trinidad
Richards added while that was his public profile, Sir Ellis gave his support to causes which did not necessarily bear the stamp of officialdom. “In tribute to his life, let us all resolve to heed his example,” Richards said. Sir Ellis represented an era in public affairs and in personal dignity upheld the best characteristics of what many saw as the finest of T&T quality. Sir Ellis’ spouse Lady Ermyntrude, his son Peter and daughter Margaret Ann completed his family, Richards added.
