Claxton Bay father of four Sham Kungebeharry was warned to turn over a new leaf this year, after San Fernando Magistrate Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds handed him a three-month prison term with hard labour. Kungebeharry, 40, of Cement Line, Macaulay, who said he used cocaine to get calcium in his teeth, was sent to jail after he pleaded guilty to cocaine possession. He was arrested On December 30 by PC Steewarson Noyan.
Kungebeharry begged the magistrate for a chance. He said he served time for larceny and did not want to be sent back to prison. Ramsumair-Hinds, however, in passing sentence told Kungebeharry: "You cannot escape what you are going to get today...given your record and the sentencing principles...When you come out, it is up to you to make use of the new year. "It is a new decade, turn your life around. It is a habit and you need to break it," the magistrate said.
PC Noyan was on mobile patrol along Parforce Road, Gasparillo, when he stopped Kungebeharry and searched him. The officer found 0.4 grammes of cocaine on Kungebeharry. When confronted by police, Kungebeharry said, "Officer gimme ah chance nah." Kungebeharry told Ramsumair-Hinds he wanted some relief since his father, brother and sister "pass out on me." He said he had two previous convictions, one for larceny and the other for marijuana possession.
