The PM also said that serious consideration was being given to imposing the death penalty on convicted killers who would have exhausted all the constitutional appeals. She said there were no candidates for execution at this time in T&T. She said she was hoping to meet with Chief Justice Ivor Archie and Attorney general Anand Ramlogan to see what could be done to speed up the trials to ensure that under the existing law their appeals could be exhausted within the stipulated five-year period from conviction to allow for the execution of the death penalty. Persad-Bissessar stressed that she would convene a meeting of the National Security Council shortly and on its completion, she would make a statement on new measures to deal with crime in T&T. She insisted the Government was not about to give up the fight against crime as it remained the nation's biggest challenge at this time.
