"We trying to get students off the streets so they could stay in school. It is a community initiative. It will be ongoing and from here onwards it will be stepped up," Julien said. He explained that once the names were given to the school principals, parents could be informed about the whereabouts of their children.
Several passers-by who saw the police officers in action, praised the initiative. Carolyn Walters, of San Fernando, said: "Every morning when I go to work at nine o clock, I see the children with their obnoxious behaviour walking up High Street. Some of them fight, they cuss loudly and I ask myself what are they doing out of school?" Some of the pupils who were interviewed said they were awaiting transportation. Several school officials said pupils who arrived late for classes were often put on detention.
