"I think that has been a regular announcement by the Government since it assumed office.
"It is not news to me. The Government needs to walk the talk. "I don't see any seriousness to the announcement. It is ole talk and PR. "I have never seen anything, so I have to be frank about it."
Sat Maharaj,
Secretary general of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha:
"I am in agreement with the Prime Minister that we should review the categories of capital punishment.
"Hanging is not the answer to all such criminal offences. "The law must take into account the circumstances that would have triggered the emotions of the person. "I anxiously await the input of state attorneys and attorneys. "I will prefer to have a national debate than a political debate because we need to get the nation involved."
Gregory Aboud,
President, Downtown Owners and Merchants Association:
"While we fully appreciate the announcement of this initiative as an expression of concern by the Government of a horrible crime situation, we maintain our view that before we can begin hanging or any other form of deterrent, we must first be able to apprehend and convict perpetrators. "If we had any improvement in the arrest and conviction rate, T&T would be far more law-abiding and orderly than it currently is."
