Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says to have a long and happy marriage, couples must share their differences, keep communication open and always remember that they will never always see "eye to eye." Speaking at the wedding reception of her niece, Allyson Lowkie-Laloo, and Rennison Laloo, held at Paraiso, Macaulay, Claxton Bay, on Saturday, Persad-Bissessar said she got married to her high school sweetheart Greg Bissessar, a man who supported her throughout her political life.
Looking fondly in the direction of her spouse, Persad-Bissessar said: "We started high school together, we went to college together, we went to university together and we started our professional lives together." She told the newly-wed couple that although there were differences in her relationship, support was unconditional. "After 40 years of marriage to my husband Greg, if I were to give you advice from my experiences, I would tell you that my happiness and strength came from the fact that we always support each other," the Prime Minister said.
"We share many things...There are some things that you don't share. "There are differences but we have to also share those differences just as we share the things we have in common. "For the 40 years of marriage, I could not be who I am, and could not do what I do, if it were not for my husband Greg." She told the newly-weds that they should always give each other strength. "As you grow together, remember that in everything, you will not see eye to eye," she said.
"The key is to communicate and uplift each other...You have to see the differences and love those differences just as much as you love what each of you have in common. "Each of you will bring different strengths to the relationship. "You will have a different way of looking at things...You will grow together."
She wished the couple the best, saying she hoped that they, too, could have more than 40 years of marriage.
