A 25-year-old Diego Martin man and his 15-year-old passenger were killed early yesterday morning when the car in which they were travelling crashed into an electricity pole on the Uriah Butler Highway near the Guayamare River. The victims have been identified as Jason Christopher West, of Upper Covigne Road, Diego Martin, and Chelsea da Costa, 15, of Lange Park, Chaguanas, a student of Bishop Anstey High School.
The teenager died at the scene while West died while being treated at the Chaguanas Health Centre. Police said they believed West was taking da Costa to her Lange Park, Chaguanas, home, after attending a Carnival fete when the fatal crash occurred. Police said he might have been speeding on the wet road. According to a police report, at around 5.30 am, West was driving an orange Honda Civic along the southbound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway.
In the vicinity of the river, he lost control of the vehicle which skidded off the road, crashing into a lamp-post. West was thrown out of the car on impact, while da Costa remained trapped inside. Fire Service personnel responded and used the jaws of life to free her from wreckage. She, however, died on the scene. Chaguanas police are continuing investigations into the accident.
