A 25-year-old Diego Mar­tin man and his 15-year-old pas­sen­ger were killed ear­ly yes­ter­day morn­ing when the car in which they were trav­el­ling crashed in­to an elec­tric­i­ty pole on the Uri­ah But­ler High­way near the Guaya­mare Riv­er. The vic­tims have been iden­ti­fied as Ja­son Christo­pher West, of Up­per Covi­gne Road, Diego Mar­tin, and Chelsea da Cos­ta, 15, of Lange Park, Ch­agua­nas, a stu­dent of Bish­op Anstey High School.

The teenag­er died at the scene while West died while be­ing treat­ed at the Ch­agua­nas Health Cen­tre. Po­lice said they be­lieved West was tak­ing da Cos­ta to her Lange Park, Ch­agua­nas, home, af­ter at­tend­ing a Car­ni­val fete when the fa­tal crash oc­curred. Po­lice said he might have been speed­ing on the wet road. Ac­cord­ing to a po­lice re­port, at around 5.30 am, West was dri­ving an or­ange Hon­da Civic along the south­bound lane of the Uri­ah But­ler High­way.

In the vicin­i­ty of the riv­er, he lost con­trol of the ve­hi­cle which skid­ded off the road, crash­ing in­to a lamp-post. West was thrown out of the car on im­pact, while da Cos­ta re­mained trapped in­side. Fire Ser­vice per­son­nel re­spond­ed and used the jaws of life to free her from wreck­age. She, how­ev­er, died on the scene. Ch­agua­nas po­lice are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the ac­ci­dent.
