Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner says "money is not a problem" to complete the extension of the Solomon Hochoy Highway from San Fernando to Point Fortin. Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony at Golconda on Tuesday, Warner said the government has mind blowing offers on the table, both locally and from abroad. He was responding to statements by Opposition member Colm Imbert that there is no money to build the 50 km highway which has a price tag of $7.2 billion.
A cap will be implemented to ensure that cost overruns do not exceed $350 million. Warner also denied claims by Imbert that the successful bidder, Brazilian firm Construtora OAS, has been given contracts to build sporting stadia in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup. He said in this country everything surrounding Fifa and himself seemed to be tainted with corruption, but assured that the firm was selected as the preferred contractor long before the PP came into office and his appointment as Works Minister.
